Ford has been synonymous with pulse-pounding performance and maximum capability for well over a century. Known for building race-winning muscle cars and muscular work-ready pickup trucks, choosing a Ford is always a smart option if you’re craving power and reliability. In the storied history of the Ford brand, one of the most proven and coveted modular engines in the industry is known as the Coyote 5.0. Introduced over a decade ago, the Ford Coyote engine continues to excel under the hood of both the Ford Mustang and the Ford F-150. Have you been curious about what makes the Ford Coyote engine special? You’ve come to the right place! Sarchione Ford of Randolph has created this informative guide that covers the history and specifications of this legendary engine. Let’s dive in!

History of the Ford Coyote Engine

Initially conceived in concept in 2007, Ford engineers worked tirelessly to develop and perfect their next generation of modular engines. Although you can trace the roots of the Ford modular engine family back several decades, the new engine was created as a replacement with the legendary Ford Windsor V8. The term “modular” refers to its ability to streamline the assembly plant in an effort to produce multiple engine variants for use in various different applications ranging from sports cars to work trucks.

As competition from brands like Chevrolet and Dodge revamped their muscle car lineups, Ford took the initiative and launched their all-new first-generation 5.0L V8 engine dubbed “Coyote” in 2011. Why is it called Coyote? The first four-valve V8 engine racecar from Ford, piloted by legendary driver AJ Foyt, was named The Coyote and earned a total of 25 victories including two Indy 500 wins in the 1960s and 1970s. A fitting name for a potent race-inspired engine.

  • Coyote Generation 3 - 2018-2023 (460 HP)
  • Coyote Generation 4 - 2024-Present (480 / 500 HP)

Since its introduction in 2011, the Coyote engine has been standard on Mustang GT models and select F-150 pickup trucks as a standalone option. Ford also sells the Coyote V8 as a crate motor, making it quite popular among classic car enthusiasts and in motorsports applications as its compact size and outstanding performance numbers separate it from other options on the market.
